Oceanic is a recording studio located in Sydney, NSW, Australia just minutes from the legendary Northern Beaches.
Vintage and state of the art recording gear, creative environment, 18 foot ceilings, natural light, recycled materials in timber and stone from churches, theatres, old pubs, casinos and houses, a view of bushland, acoustically isolated floor and walls, separate control room and studio, control room acoustics by Mike Fronzek.

We offer a world class recording facility in Sydney’s Northern Beaches where music can be made easily and quickly with the minimum of fuss.
Owned by Midnight Oil’s Jim Moginie, it reflects his experience as a musician, producer and engineer and the people here and on the international stage he has worked with over a 40 year career.
“When I was younger and before I was kidnapped by rock and roll, I worked in the CSIRO building lab testing acoustic materials as a technical officer Grade 1, and trained as a scientist specialising in acoustic design. We based the drum room loosely on the Townhouse in London’s, not too large but with a high ceiling to focus the sound of drums, the most important but difficult thing to get right on any record. If you put a mic up on anything at Oceanic and it sounds good straight away, especially through the Neve mic preamps, and then can be shaped with the cool outboard gear. Mixes done here translate really well to the outside world also. I wanted a place where people would feel comfortable and relaxed, not a clinical space, but a warm place utilising timber, stone and glass and with instruments all around, a bit like someone’s house, except with great gear.’ Jim Moginie

I’ve been working at Oceanic since it opened back in 2009.
For musicians it can be like arriving at Aladdin’s cave, with it’s array of vintage and esoteric instruments, tape machines and amps, and for Producer’s and engineers it’s the same feeling with a vintage Neve console, an API console, quality microphone collection and, what is according to the many drummers that have experienced it, a truly great drum room.
With the recent additions of another sizeable booth and mezzanine level, Oceanic has more useable space for more complex setups with the ability to maintain separation if so desired, yet it is still an intimate space which I find makes it easier for everyone to connect and get their best results.
Oceanic has a unique balance of state of the art digital hardware and software, plus the vintage gear that is so sort after today. I advise anyone looking to record in a great acoustic space to come and check it out before their next project.
